Understanding Moon Phases in Astrology

The Moon is the fastest-moving celestial body in astrology, changing signs roughly every 2.5 days and completing its full cycle of phases in approximately 29.5 days. This rapid rhythm creates a constant, pulsing energy that astrologers have tracked for thousands of years — and that modern research continues to find correlates with human behaviour, mood, and physiology.

Each lunar cycle contains four primary phases, each carrying distinct astrological significance. The New Moon marks the beginning of the cycle — a time of darkness and potential, associated with setting intentions, planting seeds, and initiating new projects. This is the sky's blank page, offering a fresh start in whatever sign the New Moon occupies.

The First Quarter Moon arrives roughly a week later, bringing a sense of tension and decision. Plans initiated at the New Moon encounter their first obstacles, requiring adjustments and commitment. The Full Moon, arriving at the cycle's midpoint, illuminates what has been hidden. Emotions run high, situations reach their peak, and the results of earlier actions become visible. Full Moons are associated with culmination, release, and heightened awareness.

The Last Quarter Moon is a time of reflection and release. As the Moon wanes, energy naturally turns inward. This phase favours letting go of what no longer serves you, clearing space for the next cycle's new beginning. Understanding these rhythms does not require belief in lunar causation — simply paying attention to the cycle creates a useful framework for pacing effort, reflection, and rest.

In addition to phase, the Moon's zodiac sign colours its influence. A Full Moon in Aries carries a very different energy than a Full Moon in Pisces. Aries Full Moons tend to bring bold revelations and calls to action, while Pisces Full Moons are more emotional, intuitive, and spiritually oriented. The sign adds specificity to the phase's general theme, making each lunation unique.

Eclipses are intensified versions of New and Full Moons that occur when the lunar nodes align with the Sun and Moon. Solar eclipses (supercharged New Moons) mark potent beginnings that can set the tone for months. Lunar eclipses (supercharged Full Moons) bring dramatic revelations and endings. Eclipse seasons, occurring roughly twice per year, are considered among the most significant periods in the astrological calendar.
